SUMMA was realized as spatial sound and image installation at the 8th New Media Art festival “Art + Communication” 2006: WAVES, August 2006 Riga, Latvia. (http://rixc.lv/waves/).
There exists a continuous scientific thread that explores physical and psychological effects of vibration on human, which doubtlessly do exist. Practices as Vibration medicine, Electromagnetic therapy, Ultra Low Frequency Sound Healing, coexist in the line with negative effects such as anxiety and fatigue caused by vibration. Persons experience various responses according to different frequencies, modulations and level intensities.
The installation explores the interaction that arise from adding together a large number of sinusoidal sound waves: they create harmonies, beatings, and countless interference patterns forming an intense pulsating soundscape, combining qualities both of natural and technological. The installation creates a sine dominant world, where one can experience being inside of field of “artificial” sound, based on mathematical knowledge and that of natural sciences.
Following the concept of space as metaphor for organisation, the composition of waveform mixture in the environment is organized by abstract 3d structures. The shapes are formed from points in space and location of each point determines the location of waveform in frequency-phase-amplitude lattice of the sine-field. Controlled by iterative real-time algorithms these generated structures dynamically evolve over time, resulting in changes in soundscape accordingly.
The physical installation is realized as isolated sound room, equipped with eight speakers and video projection displaying the three-dimensional control structures on the ceiling of the room. The octaphonic speaker setup makes use of sound spatialisation techniques to simulate properties of imaginary space and virtual localization of sound sources. More photos from installation:
